Can’t We All Just Get Along?

I’ve been reading about data portability as it applies to social technologies.

The basic idea is that with so many social technologies out there, people are trying to create interfaces that brings them all together and negate having to visit 15 different sites to find out what your friends are doing. Plaxo is just one example of a site trying to integrate all these social networks.

This same problem occurs with large enterprises and their backup media. Some enterprises, either through acquisition of companies, or changing philosophies within their own, have ended up with multiple backup systems.  That is one of the reasons we made Vertices so flexible.

In fact, one of the reasons our large enterprises use Vertices is because it works with all of their backup systems and gives data center managers a “single pane of glass” approach to managing their media. So from one central location and one interface, they can manage all their backup media regardless of what backup software (or variety of software) they use to back it up.
