Business history will note 2006 as a watershed year for how companies tackled management of their generated electronic data. Marked changes to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (FRCP) created the buzzword "eDiscovery." Today, with large fines recently being levied for eDiscovery non-compliance, companies are scrambling to understand their eDiscovery obligation under the FRCP and determine whether they are effectively managing their electronically stored data.
Recent government privacy and accountability regulations have led to sweeping overhauls of enterprise IT environments in an effort to become compliant. Tape management and, in particular, the use of a comprehensive tape management system can be an effective tool in helping companies become compliant with many of the regulations contained within the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and HIPAA.
Media management in distributed environments presents both management and technical challenges that must be addressed. Management issues include defining responsibilities and policies across the enterprise; technical issues include implementing the policies and compensating for the less sophisticated logging utilities of open systems. In today's environment, only the approaches that successfully address both the management and technical issues are successful.
