Vertices® Helps Pediatrix Avoid Growing Pains.
Background
Pediatrix Medical Group is the nation's leading provider of maternal-fetal, newborn and pediatric subspecialty physician services. Pediatrix's innovative clinical model is reshaping the delivery of critical care by advancing evidence-based medicine among more than 1,050 neonatal, maternal-fetal and pediatric subspecialists and over 400 advanced nurse practitioners in 32 states and Puerto Rico.
Working in a collaborative environment, Pediatrix clinicians focus on improving patient care and participate in ongoing research and quality improvement programs to enhance outcomes nationwide. Pediatrix is also one of the nation's largest providers of newborn hearing and metabolic screenings.
The Situation
For years, Pediatrix used an internally developed database program as its tape management system, and it worked well for their purposes. However, since all the information had to be entered manually, the process took quite some time-as much as four hours a day. In addition, their system could not communicate with their storage facility, Iron Mountain®.
As their enterprise began to grow, they found the task of managing all their media more difficult and more time-consuming.
In addition, new government regulations such as the Health Insurance and Portability Act (HIPAA) require new levels of security and accessibility concerning patient files.
The Solution
After conducting an extensive search, Pediatrix found that the Vertices® Tape Management System (Enterprise Edition) with the Automation Module for VERITAS NetBackup™ was the perfect solution, providing security, reliability and a tremendous time-savings.
With Vertices, Pediatrix's entire system is now automated. Pediatrix is able to store, move, track and protect all the media from one central location. Tapes are labeled and scanned, virtually eliminating the occurrence of human error. Complex vaulting schedules are handled with ease. Comprehensive audit reports are run with a click of a button. And the time it takes to manage media has been reduced from four hours a day to only 30 minutes.
In addition, Vertices integrates seamlessly with Pediatrix's backup application. It also communicates effectively with the systems at their vault location. In turn, vaults can now be reconciled quickly and accurately.
"For us, one of the biggest benefits has been Vertices ability to communicate easily and securely with Iron Mountain," said Bob Closius "We always know where our data is and can easily track it."
Follow-up
Installed since July 2007, Vertices has made the tape management process at Pediatrix efficient, effective and accurate. And with Vertices' intuitive interface, the learning curve for Pediatrix' IT staff was greatly reduced.
"We're very satisfied with Vertices," said Bob Closius. "It has made managing our media much easier."
