Preparing for Disaster

I was reading an article today that perfectly outlines the importance of developing a solid disaster recovery plan. It provides some do’s and don’ts about disaster recovery. I especially liked their Top 10 Tips.

Of course, the one that stood out for me was “Where’s the data?”, which focuses on finding the backup tapes you need to reinstate your data. This is where the benefit of having a superior tape management system  in place can be the difference between a momentary pause in your business flow and complete ruin.

The article focuses on severe disasters like Sept. 11th and Katrina, but the problem with catastrophic disasters is that most people think of them as isolated incidents, and that something like that will never affect them.

However, disaster recovery is not about just preparing for once-in-a-lifetime events. It’s about preparing for any event that could disrupt or corrupt your data. There are computer viruses, natural disasters like floods and tornadoes, and even corporate sabotage.

The old saying goes that it is better to be safe than sorry and that is never more true than when it comes to protecting your company’s data.
