B&L Associates Archived Data Manager® Can Make Catalog Backups 90% Faster

Partnership Brings Unprecedented Efficiencies to Backup, Migration, and eDiscovery While Significantly Reducing Data Center Costs and Carbon Footprint

NEEDHAM, MA - April 13, 2010- Recent surveys of IT executives show that close to 58% of their backups are taking 20 hours or more to perform. B&L Associates, Inc., a leader in innovative data management solutions, has developed a solution that drastically cuts catalog backup times and streamlines the entire data center.

Inactive data consumes an average of 60% of the catalog backup process. B&L’s Archived Data Manager (ADM) identifies inactive backup catalog data and enables users to migrate that data to an ADM-managed catalog archive, reducing the backup window for production catalog backups by up to 90%. ADM centralizes all decommissioned and production backup catalogs, providing a single-pane-of-glass approach to monitoring the entire backup infrastructure. Users can then quickly and easily search catalog metadata by a number of different criteria. With the help of B&L’s technology partner Index Engines, ADM users can quickly and easily index, access, and restore that archived data— all without the need for the original backup software.

"Archived Data Manager provides a tangible, easy-to-implement solution that helps tame the explosion of electronic stored information organizations have to manage today," said Arun Taneja, consulting analyst and founder of the Taneja Group. "ADM makes managing and—more importantly from a compliance standpoint—accessing archived data easier and the entire process more efficient."

In addition, ADM aids in the migration from one backup application to another by simply archiving the data. Since the backup application is no longer needed to restore archived files, organizations are free to choose any vendor at any time. This ability virtually eliminates backup vendor dependency.

"ADM brings a whole new level of efficiency to the data center," stated Michael Kramer, VP Sales and Marketing at B&L Associates. "The amount of data is expanding exponentially, but the time you have to backup remains the same. ADM addresses this problem head on while providing a number of other benefits for the data center."

ADM also helps reduce business and legal risks while staying completely compliant. The ADM solution enables retention management so users can keep data only as long as they have to. Moreover, ADM extracts, consolidates, and centrally indexes all enterprise backup information. The result is a drastic reduction in the number of tapes that need to be restored in the event of an eDiscovery request. Random and expensive eDiscovery searches are replaced by organized searches of smaller sets of information.

In terms of green IT, ADM is as good for the environment as it is for the bottom line. Many companies must retain older backup catalogs for compliance and litigation. Migrating these catalogs creates additional hardware, software, and infrastructure costs to the tune of $15,000 per year. ADM allows customers to decommission older backup servers that are no longer being used, significantly cutting costs as well as reducing their overall carbon footprint.
