Answering the call for big data backup

February 17, 2012

Although some companies are still working to get their backup tape management protocols in order, the pace of modern business waits for no man. The age of big data is now clearly in view and corporate IT professionals will soon have to determine not if, but how their media management practices must adapt.

To take advantage of all the potential stored in big data, the first challenge will be simply capturing and preserving this wealth of information. The new rules of the job will likely necessitate a comprehensive review of current storage architecture within most companies to assess how capacity can be added or archives consolidated.

"If exceeding capacity requires you to spread backups across additional systems, consider the costs of additional administrative complexity, capital expense and disruption to your environment," eWeek staff writer Chris Preimesberger advised in his latest report.

The columnist suggested that such considerations will also inspire companies to touch on the topic of data deduplication as they attempt to compress data stores. Although valuable, it is important to consider how this strategy may influence separate performance variables and work with vendors to determine how restore speed will be impacted by different iterations of the technology.

It will also be important to assess how the changing tides of media management affect staff roles. As former duties become obsolete and new responsibilities emerge, IT skill sets will have to evolve. According to Preimesberger, companies may have to answer more conceptual questions such as how to retain visibility over quickly expanding data backup environments and how to best collaborate with managed service providers.

Although planning for big data backup can seem overwhelming, it may be best to approach strategies from a business side perspective. According to PCWorld, clear communications across organizational departments and levels will help IT staff distinguish which media management objectives must be prioritized for company success.
