Museum turns to tape for disaster recovery needs

Britain's Imperial War Museum is regarded as a vital cultural institution, facilitating the study and understanding of modern warfare through its preservation of artifacts dating back to World War I. In an effort to ensure the safety of its vast collections, the IWM has recently completed the installation of a comprehensive backup tape management system courtesy of a large government grant.

The IWM's collections are housed in five separate locations across the United Kingdom and serve a variety of functions. The institution is a national art gallery, records archive and research center in addition to its role as a traditional wartime museum. This evolution in disaster recovery strategy is just one component of a $4.7 million media management initiative that will see the deployment of state-of-the-art scanning equipment and content management platforms as well.

"The shift to digital content and the need for organizations to protect their archives is one of the great challenges in the storage industry today," explained technology provider spokeswoman Molly Rector. "By creating an active archive system across tape and disk, IWM has not only addressed its needs from a capacity perspective, but is also able to make its archived assets readily available, supporting the- business' drive to increase revenue streams through licensing and reprints."

The new tape management solution will be an invaluable addition to IWM operations, providing one terabyte of storage capacity. The combined collection currently contains a library of 155,000 books, 6,500 hours of video tape, 6 million photographs and more than 30,000 hours of historical sound recording set for digitization. Some of the more sensitive material includes original audio and video footage of Sir Winston Churchill and the Battle of Britain.
