Compliance and Disaster Recovery News

Disaster recovery tops health IT concerns

February 13, 2012

Healthcare providers weathered a historically challenging year for data management in 2011. Out of concern for both security and compliance, it appears as though disaster recovery solutions will be the top investment priority among health IT leaders in the coming months.

In a survey of more than 150 healthcare IT professionals from around the world, analysts from BridgeHead Software discovered that 55 percent of respondents view disaster recovery as the most important area of concern in 2012. This year's findings suggest an evolution in media management priorities, considering 44 percent of respondents placed disaster recovery and data backup in their top three IT investments for the 2011 version of the study.

Additionally, disaster recovery concerns were deemed more important than the challenges presented by archiving, virtualization, cloud computing and electronic health record conversion.

"These survey results confirm what we expected: disaster recovery is becoming more of a priority, not less. This is largely due to the fact that hospitals continue to generate massive amounts of different types of data via a variety of information systems," explained BridgeHead chief executive Jim Beagle. "Amid this technological complexity and unstoppable data growth, the first step towards a robust [disaster recovery] strategy is not an easy one to define."

This notion was highlighted in the inconsistencies observed in the media management protocols adopted by survey respondents. For example, 60 percent of respondents reported managing more than 1 terabyte of data, yet just one in three could pinpoint the exact figure. Additionally, 64 percent indicated that their organizations had a disaster recovery strategy in place, but only 26 percent had the confidence to describe their systems as "robust, tried and tested."

The report did reveal that 45 percent of respondents are planning a major storage upgrade within the next 12 months. However, increased investment will be of little assistance without identifying the proper objectives with explicit and quantifiable strategies.
