Effective disaster recovery, data backup still eluding SMBs

Small and medium-sized businesses have been placing increased emphasis on disaster recovery preparedness in recent months, according to a new report from Acronis, but a number of barriers continue to stand in their way.

The research firm's second annual Global Disaster Recovery Index surveyed nearly 6,000 SMBs across 18 countries to learn how companies were coping following a historically challenging year in data protection. The report turned up several encouraging findings, including the revelation that businesses are now an average of 14 percent more confident in their data backup and disaster recovery capabilities than they were in the 2011 version of Acronis' study.

Having the right tools and resources - such as a backup tape management facility and explicit media management policies - were cited as primary drivers of this growth in SMB confidence.

"Underlying this increase in confidence is the fact that 66 percent of businesses are checking their backup and disaster recovery plans more regularly, possibly as a consequence of the catastrophic natural disasters which hit most regions during 2011," Acronis analysts explained.

Unfortunately, a number of operational and organizational disconnects continue to prevent the optimization of preparations. For example, most SMBs will be facing a heightened challenge with a flat IT budget in 2012. With the typical small business creating "almost 40TB of fresh data each year" and allocating just 10 percent of IT spending toward data backup and disaster recovery, companies could still be facing significant risks. The fact that almost half of survey respondents suggested that business executives were not supportive of their data protection objective could also spur organizational discord.

One specific operational concern highlighted in the report was the difficulty of securing data in hybrid environments. With 53 percent of respondents using separate media management solutions for physical and virtual storage environments, the vast majority agreed that moving data between layers was their most difficult challenge.
