B&L ADDS BATCH SCANNING AND LABELING CAPABILITIES TO VERTICES MEDIA MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE

NEEDHAM, Mass. - Jan. 31, 2000 -- B&L Associates, Inc., a leading provider of computer media management software, today announced that it has enhanced both the batch scanning input and label output capabilities of Vertices®, its comprehensive, enterprise-wide removable media management system. The enhancements will make it easier for users to log and track computer tapes, CDs and other computer media and will give more flexibility in designing labels.

Vertices tracks removable physical media such as magnetic tape, disk, CD-ROM, Digital Linear Tape (DLT), and other media. It is well suited for tracking data center media as well as for keeping track of PC and workstation media and licensed software. Vertices manages media from any source, including Microsoft Windows, Windows NT, Windows 2000 and UNIX, as well as from traditional mainframe environments, such as IBM and Unisys.

Wireless Batch Scanner

Vertices can be used with leading scanning devices including wireless scanners from Symbol. The scanning device holds all or part of the Vertices database to enable operators to scan information from barcodes on the media and compares it to the database. This allows operators to remotely log any type of media, perform inventory functions, produce reports and, most importantly, perform scratch and purge verification to ensure that critical data is protected. The portable, wireless features of the system allow operators to control media in remote sites and easily perform batch reconciliations with the Vertices database.

New Flexible Label Designs

B&L also announced a more flexible label designer that accommodates up to 15 customizable fields and enables users to include customized logos and designs. In addition, operators can print one label at a time or print full sheets. The new Vertices label software works with virtually any printer at speeds of up to two seconds per label.

"These enhancements to Vertices make an already versatile product even more useful," commented Michael Kramer, vice president of sales and marketing for B&L Associates. "Our goal is to make the identification, movement and control of removable computer media as automatic and secure as possible. Remote scanning and faster, more flexible labeling are steps in this direction."
