Better safe than sorry with backup tape management precautions

Keeping up with the ever-increasing volume and variety of corporate assets is a difficult process for even the most seasoned IT professional. Big data and changing device resources make it difficult for personnel to understand all the resources at their disposal, let alone properly network and monitor all of these channels. While moving toward new infrastructure is vital for staying ahead of modern trends, there are significant risks involved with adopting innovative technology with which organizations are not familiar. In such cases, it’s best for organizations to approach new deployments and backup tape management with a mixed media approach.

By combining tapes, disk drives, virtualization and cloud servers, it’s easy for entities to create meaningful use from their assets without losing control of their resources. Additionally, but fostering hybrid environments like this, it’s easier for firms to protect their information and promote better system continuity.

According to InfoWorld, there is always a need for more backups of this nature. Without the proper protection from outside threats and internal misuse, businesses could be putting themselves in difficult positions wherein their files are not as safe as they think they are. This can easily lead to breaches, hacks and thefts.

New trends and options
The source mentioned that modern resources are making it far easier for entities to ensure that their backup tape management is functioning at optimal levels. InfoWorld pointed to a specific example of how almost two decades ago, a business would have to implement a wide variety of remote backup tape resources to ensure that, no matter the kind of crisis, there would always be a tape image from the night before that would offer the right kind of continuity protection.

Now, though, the cloud and virtualization strategies offer companies the same peace of mind, but with much more rapid transmission capabilities. The combination of these two assets ensures that organizations are always in control of their existing infrastructure, and are getting the best return on investment for these deployments.

InformationWeek stated that it’s best for businesses to compare the benefits of their different solid state and digital assets. Backup tape management is ideal for larger files and applications, as latency and throughput problems due to bandwidth limitations make such documents otherwise unwieldy in the cloud. Similarly, smaller daily-use documents are best placed in the cloud for easy, rapid access. Balancing these resources requires ongoing monitoring of systems and better tape tools.
